ASBESTOS RESPONSE

PRIORITIZING HEALTH & SAFETY

Our team takes a proactive role in identifying and addressing potential health and safety concerns across all district facilities — before they become problems. Key areas of focus include indoor air quality, hazardous materials management, safety data sheet compliance, staff training, and emergency preparedness. We work closely with building administrators, maintenance staff, and district leadership to uphold a culture of safety in every school.

Through ongoing employee training, regular facility assessments, and adherence to established safety policies and procedures, our Environmental Health & Safety team plays a critical behind-the-scenes role in making Forest Hills Public Schools a place where learning can happen without compromise.

STORMWATER PERMIT AND MANAGEMENT

As a public school district, Forest Hills Public Schools has a responsibility to manage stormwater runoff across its campuses in compliance with state and federal regulations. Located in West Michigan, home to the breathtaking Lake Michigan shoreline and fed by beloved waterways including the Grand River and Thornapple River, our community has a deep connection to the natural environment around us. Our grounds and facilities team works to minimize the impact of stormwater on these local waterways by maintaining proper drainage systems, managing impervious surfaces, and implementing best practices for erosion and sediment control. We are committed to protecting and preserving Michigan’s precious water resources through proactive pollution prevention measures that keep harmful runoff, contaminants, and sediment out of our streams, rivers, and lakes. Protecting the health of our waterways and ecosystems is not just a regulatory obligation, it is a reflection of our values as a district and our commitment to preserving the natural beauty of West Michigan for generations of students to come.

FHPS takes an active role in protecting these resources through effective stormwater management planning and practices and works closely with the Lower Grand River Organization of Watersheds (LGROW) and the Grand Valley Metro Council to obtain and manage a stormwater discharge permit that is required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

This permit is required under Section 402 of the Federal Clean Water Act, as amended, and under WaterResources Protection (Part 31, Act 451, PA 1994) of the Michigan NaturalResource and Environmental Protection Act (NREPA), as amended.

This permit requires us to coordinate our property development and maintenance through best management practices that are used throughout the region during and after construction to prevent or minimize water quality impacts from stormwater runoff.

ASBESTOS RESPONSE

As required in 1989, Forest Hills Public Schools conducted an asbestos survey of all buildings. Based on these findings, a comprehensive management plan was drafted. This plan details the response actions the district will take regarding any asbestos containing material found in our buildings.

Every three years, we conduct a full inspection of any remaining asbestos containing material. This inspection is required under the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act.

This plan is available for inspection at our Operations Department without cost or restriction during normal business hours. If you want a personal copy, it will be mailed to you upon request. Please contact the Operations Department, 493-8780, with any questions.

SAFETY DATA SHEETS

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for chemicals used within Forest Hills Public Schools are maintained by the district’s Facilities/Operations and Maintenance Department. The district does not publicly host a centralized SDS database online.

FILTER FIRST – CLEAN/SAFE DRINKING WATER

The health and safety of our students starts with the basics, including the water they drink every day. In compliance with Michigan’s Filter First legislation, signed into law by Governor Gretchen Whitmer in October 2023, Forest Hills Public Schools has developed a Drinking Water Management Plan (DWMP) and installed lead-reducing filters on all consumptive fixtures across district facilities. Filtered water is regularly tested to ensure it meets safety standards, giving families confidence that the water available to students is clean and safe. By meeting the requirements set forth by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP), FHPS reaffirms its commitment to protecting every child in our care from exposure to lead in drinking water.
